Homework Assignments

These assignments are to be presented at your test, after being pre-checked by your Sensei. These are designed to be completed over 2 to 3 months--please ask for help if this is a concern and ask for resource ideas.

Please note that some of these assignments are mandatory requirements while others are optional and can earn you extra credit points on your overall black belt test. Mandatory assignments that are not completed may result in points subtracted from Black Belt test.

Be creative: you may substitute written reports for posters, art projects or audio/video cassettes. Parents may type assignments, if desired. When these assignments are ready, bind them together in one folder. Because these assignments are designed for both juniors and adults, there are no requirements on length or detail. That will be determined by you, the candidate, and your supervising Sensei-the goal is to do your best for your level.

Mandatory Requirements

1. Summarize the histories of Seibukan Shorin-Ryu, Chinese Kempo and Traditional Wu Shu Chinese styles of mertial arts, if you are doing a kata from any of these styles. Include important people, dates and circumstances leading to the development of these styles.

2. Give a brief history of the traditional martial arts weapons and how they were used.

3. List or chart the translation and authors of all your basic kata.

Optional For Extra Credit

1. Develop and create your personal mission statement and personal creed that you will live by as a Black Belt to show your karate-do.

2. Research lineage and biography of Kyoshi Bryan. Possible 20 extra credit points.

Ideas for research can include:

Personal interview with a set of questions with a Master Instructor..

    For example:

How old were you when you started training?

      What is your favorite kata?

      Who was your Sensei?

What styles of karate have you studied?

Record history through ranks and styles.

      Tournament history.

      Favorite teachers and favorite activities.

Most difficult challenges in karate that you had to overcome.

(Expand on your own ideas and questions.)

Put your information into written form or audio cassette that can be transcribed by a parent.

Read plaques in your dojo (especially see North School) that report Kyoshi's accomplishments.

Chart lineage on a poster, if desired.

3. Interview at least one other Sensei at any of our ABBA school using the same guidelines as above. Possible 10 extra credit points.

4. Read and write a summary of your favorite martial arts books. See suggested book list for ideas. It is desirable for adults to read at least five books. Possible 50 (or 10 points per book) extra credit points.

5. For some candidates at the Shodan-Ho level, an essay on an assigned topic may be given as your contribution to the general knowledge' past down through our school to our students. Possible 50 extra credit points.

Good luck! We hope that these assignments along with your black belt test and graduation will be a positive and memorable event in your life.
