Looking Toward Your Test:

What You Can Expect

PHYSICAL TEST

This portion of the Black Belt test includes basic exercises, abdominal routine, 25 push ups, basic kata (Pinan 1 through 5), all self defense and one-steps from white belt through advanced sets, and several bouts of kumite (sparring) with the advance belts.

MENTAL TEST

A written test will be given to cover knowledge of the martial arts, history, kata information, kumite principles, etc. Please refer to your Manual for specific details. In addition, the candidate's attitude will be added to the overall score. This will include respect, manners, perseverance, humbleness, obedience, effort, enthusiasm, tamashii, teamwork, mental focus, self-control and integrity.

TIME IN TRAINING

Points will be awarded for each year in training; the average being 2-3 years in training.

EXTRA CREDIT

Extra points can also be earned but will be optional. Credit will be given in the following areas: completing a black belt essay (ask Kyoshi if you wish to be assigned an essay), participating in 3 or more tournaments, being a national champion, completing homework assignments (see homework letter), age over 35 years, sempai helper over 50 hours, special dedication to school and I or its business as deemed by Kyoshi, and unusual disabilities.

**Candidates must pass each category with 50% scores and overall test total must be 75%. Extra credit can help the candidate reach the 75% score, but can not make up for categories under 50%.
