Kumite Principles

Setups

Set yourself up to win physically through rigorous physical training.

Set yourself up to win mentally through mental training.

Set up your opponent with verbal and nonverbal communications.

Positioning

Position yourself for mobility.

Position yourself for the best defensive capability.

Position yourself for the best offensive capability.

Independent Movement

Make all movement independent.

Do not telegraph your techniques.

Initial Speed

Explode into your leading offensive technique.

Explode into your defensive techniques.

Push off to gain maximum speed and penetration with your opening techniques.

Angles of Attack

Use the 8 angles of attack: degrees forward to left or right

45 degrees backward to left or right.

Straight in and straight out.

Bridging the Gap

Use techniques to advance into striking areas.

Advance to kicking range.

Advance to punching range.

Simplicity of Techniques

Pick three or five techniques and learn them well.

Avoid fancy or difficult techniques.

Economy of Motion

Conserve motion by using straight line attacks.

Use the closest weapon to the target.

Use direct angles for attack and defense.

The Importance of Relaxation

Relax your body to conserve your limited supply of energy. Relax with each technique to increase your speed and power.

Mobility

Use your footwork patterns to cover distance.

Apply your footwork in three directions; vertical, horizontal and arcing.

Do everything while your body is in motion; striking, defending and faking.

Develop Reach

Maximize your reach.

Extend your reach by sliding, skipping or hopping forward when executing your techniques.

Centerline Principle

Attack targets on your opponent’s centerline. Guard your centerline from attacks.

Straight Lines

Gain extra power and speed by attacking in straight lines. Take the shortest route to the nearest target.

Use of Fakes

Fake with your hips, body and shoulders.

Fake to scare your opponent into moving.

Fake to destroy your opponent’s timing.

Constant Forward Pressure

Use forward movement to keep your opponent on the defensive.

Use aggressive body language.

Maintain constant mental pressure to keep your mind in the fight and your opponent on the run.

Timing

Attack your opponent before he can move, as he moves, and after he moves.

Attack Lines

Attack your opponent along his inside line, on his middle line, and along his line.

Broken Rhythm

Mix up your target areas from low, middle and high areas.

Vary the rhythm of your attack from passive to active.

Change the motion of your body from forward and backward to be un-predictable.

Mix up the speed of your attacks from slow to fast to throw off your opponent’s timing.

Change off between faking and attacking.

Change your attitude from passive to aggressive.

Switch your line of attack and angles of attack often.
