Pop Culture: What It Really Means

The term “pop culture” seems to have a lot of negative connotations that baby boomers associate it with, but they are indistinctly embraced by the newer generation (GenXYZ). Pop culture is today’s culture, but what it means is something we have to dig deeper to find out.

To those whom I have spoken to, they assume it to be an expression that represents a group of people who are introducing their own ways of life that is invading a well-established social order.

It may be correct in itself but most in authority do not view it in that manner.

People take it to mean that it is detrimental to society, parents should do something to interrupt its influence upon the children.

Now we also hear of the next generation being called the ‘lost’ generation, and the generation caught up with new media is called the ‘Gen Yers’ generation, and the ‘Gen Z’ are the kids growing up with highly sophisticated media and computer environment.

There is an obvious pattern wherein the leading generation does not quite understand where the next generation is going and thus tend to correct what they are doing, and saying that it is not right. So the pattern continues, the generation after this will also try to rectify what the generation next to them are doing because they say it is not right. And it goes on and on.

Have we understood pop culture yet?

So pop culture can be described by the following discussion. It is true that this is the culture of a new group that is rocking our well established social order, but not according to how we look at it.

This just means a culture that is popular to the present generation.

We all know that society is evolving and bringing many changed to our lives, therefore, each member of society should be able to live or adapt to the present order. There are also dark and bright sides to every social order and each member of the society reacts accordingly.

Pop culture or popular culture then is a kind of social reaction that people take. That is how it got its name.

So today there are so many representative icons like pop vinyls, funko pop, bobbleheads, funko pop vinyls which are very popular to this age group. And the Transformers, Batman, Star Wars, and other are also very popular to a certain age group. And what does this represent? When this generation look for figureheads to rescue society then it shows a deep mistrust of those in the lead. And when society evolves people are led to believe that they need to get out of this planet and so the Star Wars ideals.

They are not invented from out of the blue; these are simply products that represent a common culture.
